We've already written a review about the Cervelo P2 triathlon bike, and frankly the newer models of the bike don't require the Cervelo P2C designation since the newest bikes all have carbon frames.

But once upon a time, the Cervelo P2 had an aluminum frame and the Cervelo P2C had the carbon frame (hence the C designation). If you wanted the Cervelo P2C, one had to pay a good bit more for the carbon frame, seat post, and fork, but what you received in return was a good bit lighter triathlon bike with a stiffer frame.

If looking for a used Cervelo P2C and the only item that you are interested in over the aluminum bike is the carbon frame, then of course, go for the carbon frame! Having a lighter bike, especially in triathlons or time trials is frankly the first (and sometimes only) item to consider. We can always upgrade the components on the Cervelo P2C bike easier than we can upgrade the frame to better components.

And that does lead us down the road of the components. Even though the Cervelo P2C TT bike was an incredibly expensive bike, the components did not cause it to be so. Completely outfitted, the P2C carried Ultegra components at first with one or two Dura-Ace components being added to the bike in later editions.

Cervelo P2C Time Trial Bike Photos

The Cervelo P2C time trial bikes were initially made famous as the winning bike in the 2008 Kona triathlon and that bike carried Dura-Ace components. Cervelo wanted to bring the same winning P2C bike to the public, but the cost of the components was prohibitive to them doing so. Hence, the Ultegra components were installed (and are still installed today).

The real difference in Dura-Ace and Ultegra still just points back to weight. Dura-Ace might be slightly better in quality, but they are not as durable as the Ultegra, so there's a trade-off on the Cervelo P2C bike you can purchase and the one that was available to the pros. The weight of the shifters and derailleurs was where the real difference lay. But again, to get the Cervelo P2C on the market to be purchased, complete bikes were outfitted with Ultegra mostly.

Because you will be purchasing a used Cervelo P2C, the components could and probably will differ! Those who purchased the bike and understood the component issue would invariably at some point upgrade the components to Dura-Ace (or better). As a used purchaser, you get the best Cervelo P2 in the P2C frame but without the cost of the upgrades in the components.
