The Pinarello Montello road bike started life in 1983 as one of the top bikes from Pinarello. The build frame and materials used on the Monterello tops amongst all bikes, not just in the Pinarello stable. After the '85 Olympics, in which the Pinarello Montello won the time trial event, Pinarello came out with the Montello SLX, an even higher grade time trial bike with Super Record components. The Montello SLX stayed at the top levels of time trial bikes until changes in UCI rules prevented specific framesets, such as the Montello, from competing.
Pinarello took a step back, re-engineered redesigned the Montello to conform to the new rules. What Pinarello came up with was the Pinarello Montello Time Trial bike (FP8), and the Montello FM1. Both bikes are full carbon frames, the same carbon used in the Pinarello Dogma road bike. The difference in the price is associated with the especially strong Torayca carbon used on the FM1. This carbon can handle around 50 tons of pressure per square millimeter, making it the strongest material available on a road bike. However, Torayca carbon, albeit a bit less strong, is also used on the standard Pinarello Montello. The real difference in the carbon materials is seen in the price, with the FM1 costing around $1,000 more than the "standard" Montello.
